Tuesday night, a quarter to seven, and the concrete apron outside the volunteer station is still giving back the heat of the day.
They pull the two and a half inch line off the bed and flake it out across the slab, and the lieutenant says what he says every drill week. Nozzle, backup, third man on the kink. Go. He is the third man. He has been the third man since February, which is when he started, which is also the month he privately decided he was the slowest person in this company.
He knows what he looks like out here. He is forty-four and he came to this late, and there are nineteen year olds on this apron who can throw a ladder in the time it takes him to find his gloves. Three weeks ago he was half a beat behind on a coupling and nobody said one word about it, and the fact that nobody said one word about it has been sitting in his chest ever since. A man who has been quietly carried knows the feel of being carried.
So he does what he does. He gets here early. He checks his own straps twice, then a third time in the truck bay while the rest of them are drinking coffee out of paper cups and arguing about a ball game. He keeps a probation card in his wallet and he takes it out more often than anybody would guess.
Then the line charges.
Water hits the hose and the thing stops being a flat canvas ribbon on the ground and becomes something alive that wants to go somewhere, and all of that weight comes back down the line into the three of them at the same instant. The nozzle man leans. The backup leans. He leans. And for four or five seconds out there in the last of the light the three of them are not three men standing in a row. They are one shape with water running through it, and the only reason it holds its shape is that all three of them are leaning.
The lieutenant kills the water and says, good, again.
He stands there dripping in the dark, coiling nothing, and he could not tell you what just happened to him. Something about the way the pressure never once asked which of them was the best.
You have run his arithmetic. Maybe never on a fire apron, but you have stood in a room of people doing something together and quietly totaled up what you bring against what everybody else brings, come out short, and decided to keep that number to yourself. Here is what Scripture does with your number. You are part of a body that Christ assembled Himself, and you are load bearing in it right now. That is not a kind thing somebody said to you. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old private arithmetic finally let go of a man.
The company is the point
Let me say plainly what this whole site is about, because the word has been badly handled and a lot of people have quietly walked away from it.
When Scripture calls the church a bride, it is never talking about one person. It is talking about a people. A company. A whole gathered assembly of ordinary human beings across every century and every language, promised to Christ together, held by Him together, and brought home together. It is not a private romance between Jesus and an individual heart, and it was never written to be read that way. The picture is a covenant made with a people. You are inside that people, or you are not, and the difference is never how well you personally are doing at the third position on the line.
That matters here, on this apron, tonight. Because a man who thinks the promise is personal and individual has no choice but to grade himself against it, and once he starts grading he will find the ledger. Everybody finds the ledger. But if the promise was made to a company, then his standing is a fact about the company and not a score he earned inside it.
You are held inside a covenant that was made to a whole people, and your name is not the thing keeping it standing. Scripture puts it this way, and the same Spirit who set you in that people is the one who makes the words live. Notice how it names the body and the head in the same breath:
And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.Colossians 1:18
Read that slowly. The church is a body. Christ is its head. He holds first place in everything about it, which includes the joining, which includes the assembling, which includes you. You have a position in that body that was given and not competed for, and it is already settled. The written word says it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence like that off a page and sets it down inside a man who has spent months keeping score on himself.
What a head does with a body
Here is the thing about a body that a company on a hose line makes obvious.
No hand ever auditioned. No shoulder was ever interviewed. A body is not assembled out of the applicants who tested strongest; a body is assembled by its head, and every part of it holds its shape because the head decided where that part goes. The lieutenant did not put the fastest man on the kink. He put a man there. The line needs a third man far more than it needs a third champion.
And a head does not amputate what is slow. That is the whole difference between a company and a competition. A competition thins the field. A head keeps the body and works with it, and the very weakness a member is ashamed of turns out to be one of the places the head has chosen to set honor.
You have been joined to Christ's church by Christ Himself, and that joining carries no probation period in it. The word says He is the head of the body and that in everything He is first, which means the deciding was His, and His Spirit is the one who fitted you into the place you are standing in.
So the card in your wallet is answered. Not argued with. Answered. The private accounting you have been running on yourself has no right to stay, because it is measuring a thing that was never a measurement. His word hands you a body with a head, not a roster with a cut line, and the same Spirit who joined you there keeps you there.
So put the card away.
Not because you have improved, and not because somebody has finally told you that you are better than you thought. Put it away because the promise you have been grading yourself against was never a grading instrument. Christ bound Himself to a church, in public, by covenant, at the cost of His own blood, and the binding is done. He is the head of that body. He holds first place in everything about it. And a head does not run a probation period on His own body.
You are inside that company right now, and Christ committed Himself to it long before you had a thing to bring. That is not sentiment. It is what the written word says about the church, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it land where you actually live.
Which means the leaning is the job. The pressure that came back down the line did not sort those three men into best and worst. It went through all three of them at once, and the shape held because all three leaned. That is what a body under load looks like. Nobody carries it alone and nobody is carried for free, and the distance between those two worries stops mattering the second the water is on.
You have a place on the line, and it is already yours, and nothing you did or failed to do this year has moved it. His word made the church one body under one head, and the same Spirit who put you in it is the one holding the whole line steady tonight.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing. The authority in them is not yours by nature: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the written word live in your mouth. Speak them under not my will, but Thine, and leave the outcome with Him.
- Probation card in my wallet, you are not my standing in this house. Christ is the head of the body and He joined me to it Himself, and Colossians says He holds first place in everything, which puts the joining on Him and never on my performance. What He finished, I do not have to start.
- Weak link, you have no place on this line. The written word says the church is one body under one head, and the Spirit who fitted me in made no mistake with the third man back. I am load bearing in the company of Christ.
- Lord, You are the head of this body and You have never once needed my strength to hold Your church together. In the name of Jesus I take my place on the line tonight and I lean where You put me. Your Spirit is the pressure that holds all three of us up.
