He gets there twenty minutes early, which is the tell, and he sits in the car in the chapel parking lot with the engine off going over the tune one more time under his breath, because he has decided that if he is going to be found out he would rather it happened cleanly.
Four churches, one Saturday, one big combined thing for the fall. Sixty-odd people in the chapel by five past ten, folders being handed out, somebody's toddler running the length of the pews and being retrieved. He knows about eleven faces. He is forty-nine years old and he has been singing in the back row of one small congregation since he was a teenager, and the only thing he is genuinely certain of this morning is that at some point somebody is going to work out that he is the weakest voice in the room.
He has a whole plan for it. If they ask him to sing on his own he will laugh and say he is happier at the back. He has said that sentence so many times in his life that it comes out smooth now, like a coin worn down in a pocket.
Then the woman from the diocese claps twice and says, right, if you have got a folder you are in, we start at bar nine, and she is off. That is it. No names. No list. No standing up one at a time. Nobody is auditioning and nobody was ever going to be, and he stands there in the third row with his folder open at bar nine and does not sing a note for about a minute and a half, because something has come loose in his chest and he cannot work out what it is.
You have run that plan. Maybe not with a folder, but you have walked into rooms with a sentence ready for the moment they find out, and you have never in your life expected to be picked first for anything, and you have made a kind of peace with it that is not really peace.
The plan you made before anybody said anything
Let me stay in the low place a moment, because there is a real one and it is older than this Saturday. A man does not rehearse a graceful exit at forty-nine unless he has needed one before.
Somewhere behind this there is a playground, or a job, or a family where somebody else was the interesting one. And after enough years the arithmetic stops being about any particular room. It becomes a standing assumption you carry into every room in advance, so that nothing can hurt you by surprise. That is not weakness. That is a man protecting himself sensibly with the information he was given.
The trouble is what it does to a promise. When Scripture starts talking about a people God chose, a man like that reads it the way he reads everything else: as a thing with a threshold in it, and himself somewhere on the wrong side of the threshold. So let us take that apart with the verse itself, and notice when the choosing is dated.
even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.Ephesians 1:4
Before the foundation of the world. Not after a look at the applicants. You were chosen inside a company that God settled on before there was a world for anybody to be impressive in, and that is not a compliment I am paying you, it is what is written, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old defensive man able to hear it about himself.
Read the pronoun, and then read the date
Two things in that verse do all the work, and both of them are easy to walk straight past.
The first is the pronoun. He chose us. Not he chose a few of you. Paul is writing to a whole church, a mixed bag of people in a port city, and the choosing lands on the lot of them together. The bride in Scripture is never one person in a spotlight; she is a company, and belonging to her is not a competition between the people in it. Nobody in that chapel was in a run-off with anybody else, because a choir is not a contest and neither is the church. You are counted inside a people, and the word says the people were chosen as a people.
The second is the date. Before the foundation of the world. Whatever the criteria were, you were not present to meet them, and neither was anybody else who has ever worried about this. That is precisely the point Moses makes to a nation that had no reason to think well of itself: God did not set His love on you because you were the biggest or the best of the options, He set it on you because He loves you and because He keeps His oath. You have been given a place that was never awarded on merit, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on it rather than any showing you made.
So the exit sentence can go. The graceful laugh, the I am happier at the back. You can keep it for genuine modesty if you like, but it is not needed as armor any more, because there is no panel and there never was one. What Christ committed Himself to is a whole church, and Scripture says He is the one making her ready, and His Spirit is the one doing the work in every part of her, including the third row.
And read this the way it is meant, which is corporately, because the comfort actually depends on it. This is not a message about you being singled out. It is a message about a company God chose. You are in that company, and that is a fact about the company rather than a compliment about you. If you had to be individually remarkable to belong, the doubt would be reasonable. You do not, so it is not.
So stop preparing for a moment that is not coming.
The choosing happened before the world had a foundation under it, in the plural, over a whole people, and God has never once run an audition to see who would be allowed to stay. You are counted in, this morning, in the row you are actually standing in, and that is the written word rather than a kind thing said to a nervous man. It is His Spirit who set you inside the company and it is Christ who is making her ready, and neither of those two jobs was ever handed to you.
There is no list on the door. There was never a door. You are already inside, and that was settled before the world had a foundation under it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are standing, and say them in the plural where the plural belongs, because that is how they were written. The right to speak them has been given to you, and the words rest on what Scripture says God did before the world had a foundation under it, not on anything you brought into the room. What He does next with your church and with your part in it, the King decides, and none of that is being forecast here. The Holy Spirit is the one who seals a company, and He sealed this one.
- Sheet of paper on the door, you are not a shortlist and you never were one. Scripture says God chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, and before the world is a very long way before anybody could have auditioned. Stay blank as long as you like, the choosing was finished before there was a door to pin you to.
- Reflex of standing at the back before anybody has asked me to, in the name of Jesus you do not move my feet this morning. God did not set His love on a people because they were the most impressive lot available, and the word says so in as many words. Christ is in me, and I am counted in a company He picked before I could have given Him a reason.
- Father, You chose a whole people and You wrote us in before the world had a foundation under it. I am not standing here hunting for the reason I qualify, because there is not one and there was never meant to be. Company He gathered, you are the room I belong in, and I am opening my folder at bar nine with the rest of you.
