The day before staff week starts, the camp is the quietest place in the county.
He has the master key on a loop of orange cord and a clipboard he brought from home, and the clipboard is the tell. On the top sheet, in his own handwriting, is a list. It is not a list of chores. It is a list of the things he is not: never worked with kids, cannot swim well enough to guard, does not know a single one of the songs they apparently sing at flag, has never in his life led anything out loud in front of anyone. He wrote it in the parking lot forty minutes ago because writing it down felt more honest than walking in pretending.
Cabin six has a screen door that sticks. He gets it open with his shoulder and stands in the smell of pine and old varnish and floor wax, and starts down the room.
Twelve bunks, mattresses on all of them, plastic still on four. Fine.
Then he opens the supply closet at the end, and stops.
Blankets, folded and counted. A first aid box, restocked, with the tape and the ice packs on top where a person can reach them fast. Flashlight batteries in a coffee can. A laminated card with the fire route drawn on it and the number for the nurse's cabin written in marker along the bottom. A plastic bin of spare toothbrushes, because apparently every year somebody's kid forgets one, and taped to the lid a strip of masking tape that says: more under the sink.
He stands there with the clipboard against his leg. Somebody was in this cabin in June. Somebody counted twelve blankets and then went and got a thirteenth. Somebody thought about a nine year old at eleven at night who cannot find the bathroom in the dark, and drew the route on a card and laminated it so it would survive the summer.
Nobody has met him yet. The bin was filled before he was hired.
He looks down at his list, and for the first time it occurs to him that the list is about him, and the closet is about the campers, and those are not the same subject at all.
You have carried that clipboard. Not into a camp, maybe, but into a church, a table, a room of people, a place you suspected you had no business standing in, and you brought a private list of everything you would have to sort out about yourself first. Put it down for one minute and hear this. You are inside a people that was made ready by somebody else, and the preparing was under way long before your name came up. That is not a compliment. It is what the written word says about the church, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a supply closet in a man's chest and shows him it was already stocked.
Somebody was here in June
Here is the thing this whole site exists to say, and it needs saying plainly before anything else.
When Scripture speaks of a bride made ready, it is never speaking about one person. It is speaking about the church: a whole company of ordinary people, gathered out of every century and every town, promised to Christ together and prepared by Him together. Not a private romance and not an individual arrangement. A people. Which means readiness in the Bible is a corporate word, and reading it as a personal report card is the one mistake almost everybody makes with it.
So when you feel unready, you are not reading your standing correctly. You are reading your feelings accurately and drawing the wrong conclusion from them. Feeling unqualified is honest. It is simply not a verdict, and it never had the authority to be one.
You are being made ready by God Himself, and that work started without your permission and does not depend on your assessment of it. The Holy Spirit is doing that work in you this morning. Look at how Scripture says it, and watch who is doing the verbs:
Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ.Hebrews 13:20 and 21
Read the sentence for its grammar and it takes the weight off you in one move. The God of peace equips. He is the one working in us. He does it by the blood of an eternal covenant, which is to say the supplies were bought and paid for a long time before the door was unlocked. You have been equipped with everything good by the God of peace, and it is already done in you by the blood of that covenant. His word says it in plain sentences and His Spirit is the one who makes a man stop arguing with it.
The list is about you, the closet is about them
Notice what the list in his pocket actually was.
Every item on it was true. He genuinely could not swim well. He genuinely did not know the songs. Nothing on that clipboard was self pity or invention, and that is exactly why it had such a grip on him: it was accurate. But accuracy is not the same as relevance. The list was a document about him, written by him, measuring him, and it had quietly appointed itself the gatekeeper of a house it did not own.
The closet was about the campers. Blankets for cold kids. Ice for a scraped knee. A route in the dark for a nine year old who is far from home. The closet was an act of somebody's love for people who had not arrived yet, and the counselor walked into the middle of it and read it as an exam.
That is what God's preparing of His church is. It is not an assessment being run on you. It is provision laid in for a people He loves, and you are one of the people it was laid in for.
You are held inside a readiness that was granted, and it has never once been a project you had to finish. Scripture puts the equipping in God's hands and the working in God's hands, and the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is the one carrying it out in the church you belong to.
So let the list be true and let it stop being the door. The clipboard you keep on yourself has no right to stay in the doorway, because it was never given the keys. The written word says the great Shepherd of the sheep is the one who equips, and His Spirit does not hand that job back to you at the screen door.
So hand the list over.
Not because the items on it are false. Because they were never the door. Christ did not come to a church that had gotten itself sorted; He gave Himself for it, and He prepares it, and the preparing runs on the blood of an eternal covenant rather than on your progress against your own handwriting.
You have a place in a company that God is preparing Himself, and the covenant it rests on is already finished. That is the written word's own claim about the church, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it stop being theory in the middle of a Tuesday.
And notice what this frees. A man who thinks he has to get ready before he can belong will spend the entire summer working on himself, and the campers will arrive anyway. A man who knows the cabin was stocked in June walks the room, finds the flashlight batteries, and gets on with loving whoever comes through the screen door. The one who has stopped auditing himself is the one with his hands free.
You are supplied for what is actually in front of you, and the supply came from God and not from your own preparation. His word calls Him the God of peace who equips, and His Spirit is the one who keeps the closet stocked long after a nervous man has forgotten to check it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing. The authority in them is not your own: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the written word live as you speak it. Say them under not my will, but Thine, and leave the outcome with Him.
- List in my back pocket, you do not hold the keys to this cabin. Hebrews says the God of peace equips His people with everything good through Jesus Christ, and the closet was stocked in June by somebody who was thinking about the campers and not about me. What He supplied, I do not have to manufacture.
- Unqualified, you have no shelf in this house. The written word puts the equipping in God's hands and the working in God's hands, and His Spirit is the one doing the stocking in the church I belong to. I am supplied by the God who prepares His own people.
- Shepherd of the sheep, You came up out of the grave by the blood of an eternal covenant and You are the one making Your church ready. In the name of Jesus I put the clipboard down and I take what You have laid in. Your Spirit is the one warming these plates in my hands.
