It is raining the way it rains in January, not hard, just permanently, and the sidewalk outside the chapel holds a long shine from the one streetlight that works.
Tess is walking back from the pharmacy with a paper bag under her coat and her hood up, and she is taking the lane because it is shorter, and the lane goes past the chapel door.
There is light in the window. Not much. One lamp, low, and the shape of the glass making it swim.
She stops because of the rain, not because of the light. That is what she tells herself, standing under the little stone hood over the door with water coming off the edge of it in a line, and she puts her hand on the iron ring the way you touch a thing you are not going to use.
The latch lifts.
Inside there are six people and a fan heater and a smell of wet wool and hot dust off the element, and it is warmer than outside by exactly enough to notice. Four of them are past seventy. One is a boy of about sixteen with his hood still up too. And a woman in a gray cardigan at the front is reading out of a book in the unhurried voice of somebody who has read this on a Wednesday in January for a great many years.
Nobody turns around. Somebody moves a hymn book off the end of a pew about four inches, which is the entire welcome, and Tess sits down at the back with the pharmacy bag on her knees.
They say things and she does not know when to say the other half. Then they stand up and say something together that she does know, from somewhere, and her mouth does it before she decides to.
Then it is over, in about eleven minutes, which surprises her.
The woman in the cardigan comes down the aisle putting the book under her arm. "There's tea," she says. "We do tea. It's instant, I'm sorry to say."
"I haven't been in eight years," Tess says. It comes out of her like something dropped.
The woman thinks about this for approximately no time at all.
"Milk?" she says.
Tess looks past her at the door, which is standing open, letting in the cold, because nobody has shut it yet.
"Does that not lock?" she says.
"There's no lock in it," the woman says. "There hasn't been since before I was born. They took the works out in the fifties and never put another one in. Sit down, dear, the heater's better at that end."
You know the door she stopped outside.
Yours may be a building or it may be a phone call or it may be a whole way of being with people that you got out of, and you got out of it for a reason that was real at the time. And in the years since you have been quietly writing an account of yourself, an explanation, the thing you would have to say first if you ever went back, and it has grown, and its growth is exactly why you have not gone. You are invited right now, and the invitation was never withdrawn while you were away. Scripture says God heals people who turned away and loves them freely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a present sentence about you rather than an old line about a nation.
Nobody reassigned your place
Here is what did not happen while you were gone.
Nobody held a meeting about you. Nobody struck a line through anything. No committee reallocated your seat to a person more reliable, and there is no register anywhere with a note beside your name explaining your absence in the third person.
That is not a comforting guess. It follows from what the invitation actually is. The invitation is not a personal arrangement between you and a building. It was issued to a people: the church, a whole company, called and gathered across every century and every country, and you were included in that call as part of that company. You are inside a gathering God called together, and your place in it is not administered by anybody's attendance record. The written word says He heals turning away and loves freely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that live in a person standing in a lane in the rain.
That is why the door in the parable has no lock in it. Not because the parish is careless. Because a lock would be answering a question nobody in the building is asking.
I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.Hosea 14:4
Read what God says He is going to do about the turning away, and notice that He does not say He will overlook it, or that it did not happen, or that it was fine. He says He will heal it. That is a word for a wound, not a word for a debt, and it lands on a whole nation that had gone off after everything it could find.
You have been dealt with as somebody wounded rather than somebody billed, and that is already settled in the way God speaks about it. That is His word in Hosea, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence spoken over a nation twenty-seven centuries ago and stands it up in a person's chest tonight.
Freely is carrying the whole verse
Look at the middle clause: I will love them freely.
The word behind freely means without cause. Not without reason, exactly. Without a cause supplied from the other side. It is the word you use for a gift that has nothing in front of it, nothing prompting it, no invoice it settles, no behavior it rewards. God is naming the ground of His own action, and the ground is Himself.
Take a second with that, because it dismantles the speech you have been drafting. The speech assumes there is an account to give. Freely means no account is being taken. You owe no explanation at that door, and there is no ledger open with your name across the top. Hosea says He loves freely and His anger is turned away, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact you are standing in rather than a doctrine you approve of.
And nothing here tells you what to do about Sunday. Nobody on this page knows your town, your history, the room you walked out of, or what it cost you. There is no instruction coming, no deadline, no gentle pressure dressed as encouragement. The invitation is being stated, not pressed. You are welcome, and being welcome is true today whether or not you go anywhere at all. The word says He loves freely, and the Holy Spirit is not standing behind that with conditions the verse forgot to mention.
And the years are not wasted. You did not spend eight years failing. You lived them, and God was not absent from them, and there is no version of this where somebody hands you a bill for the interval.
So stand under the stone hood for a minute with the rain coming off the edge of it and let this land.
The explanation you have been writing is not required. It was never required. It has been the whole reason you have not moved, and it exists to answer a question that nobody at the door is asking and God has already answered in the other direction. The account you have been drafting has no standing here, and it has no right to keep you outside a room you belong in. Scripture says He loves freely, without cause, and the Holy Spirit is the one enforcing that word against the case you have built against yourself.
And here is the part to receive slowly. You are invited, present tense, tonight, as you are, with the pharmacy bag on your knees. Hosea 14:4 says God heals the turning away and His anger is turned away, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves that from a page to a person.
What happens next is not on this page and it is not on a clock. Where you go, and when, and with whom, is His to lead and yours to walk, and He does it in His own way. What is settled is the invitation, and the invitation did not lapse.
Declare this over yourself
- Door with no lock in it, you are not a courtesy. You are what the word says about a God who heals turning away and loves His people freely, and there has been no lock in you since long before I left. I am walking under the stone hood and lifting the latch.
- Explanation I have been drafting, you are not owed and you never were. God loves freely, which means without cause and without an account taken at the door, so there is no first sentence I have to get right. Warmth by the heater, you have my chair now.
- Shepherd, You keep a stop on the schedule for people who have not stood on the slipway in years, and Your word says You heal the turning away and love freely. In the name of Jesus I am saying out loud tonight that I am invited. I am deciding nothing else, and I do not have to.
