The Same People In the Hallway

Third floor, surgical waiting, and the vending machine at the end of the hall has been making the same noise for two hours.

He is here because his sister's husband went in at six. He has a paper cup of something he is not drinking and a coat over the chair beside him, and he has been counting ceiling tiles the way people do when there is nothing else in the room that will hold still.

Then the elevator opens and it is Ruth from the church, carrying a bag.

Then it opens again, and it is the Delgados, both of them, and a man whose name he has forgotten but whose face he could pick out of a crowd of a thousand.

By half past eight there are eleven of them in that corridor and one more parking the car. Somebody has taken over the chairs by the window. Somebody has gone for real coffee, not the machine kind. A woman he has not spoken to in over a decade is sitting with his sister, not saying anything, just sitting, with her hand on the arm of the chair between them.

And here is the part he cannot get past.

Fourteen years ago these same people, or most of them, sat in a back room and decided this family should step back from everything. He was not in the room. He heard about it the way you hear about those things, in fragments, from three directions, over about a month. He knows what was said. He knows who said it. He knows the exact tone of the phone call his sister took on a Thursday afternoon, because he was standing in her kitchen when it came.

He is not sentimental. Nothing about tonight erases that Thursday. He watches Ruth put the bag down and start unpacking sandwiches onto the little table like it is her own kitchen, and what he feels is not warmth exactly. It is something more like vertigo. The same hallway. The same people. And somehow, still, the same family.

At ten to nine the surgeon comes out and everybody stands up at once, all twelve of them, without deciding to.

You know this hallway. Maybe yours had a different floor number, but you have watched a church be two things at once and never been able to make the two things fit. Here is where I want to start. You are held by a covenant that Christ keeps from His own side, and it has never once been guaranteed by the behavior of the people in the corridor. That is not me softening anything. It is what the written word says about Christ and His church, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold both the Thursday and the hallway in a man's chest without either of them being a lie.

The people who failed, and the One who did not

Let me say plainly what the bride in Scripture is, because everything here turns on it.

The bride is the church. Not one person, not a private romance, not an individual arrangement between Jesus and a heart. It is a whole company of ordinary people across every century, promised to Christ together and kept by Him together. And the moment you see that it is a company of ordinary people, you have also seen why it can wound you. A people can hold a meeting. A people can get it wrong. A people can make a phone call on a Thursday afternoon that a family carries for fourteen years.

I am not going to tell you that was fine. It was not fine, and Scripture does not ask anybody to pretend otherwise. What happened to your family happened, and naming it honestly is not disloyalty to God. It is the only ground solid enough to stand on for the next part.

Because the covenant was never resting on that back room. You are inside a company that Christ committed Himself to, and His keeping of it has never depended on the people in it keeping each other. The written word says it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man believe it while he is still angry.

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans 8:38 and 39

Read the list, and then read what is missing from it

Paul is making a list of everything he can think of that a person might reasonably fear.

Death. Life. Rulers. Powers. Height and depth, which is as far up and as far down as a first century mind could reach. And then, because even that is not exhaustive enough for what he is trying to say, he closes it off: nor anything else in all creation.

That last clause is doing something specific. It is there for the item you would have added. Everybody reading has one. For one person it is a diagnosis. For another it is a marriage. And for the man in the corridor it is a room full of chairs and a decision and a phone call, and he has spent fourteen years quietly assuming that his particular item was the exception nobody thought to list.

It is not on the list because nothing is on the list. There is no category left. You have never been separated from the love of God in Christ, and no meeting in any back room ever had the standing to do it. Scripture closes the sentence off deliberately so nobody can slip their own case in through a gap, and the same Spirit who inspired that closing clause is the one who applies it to the case you have been keeping open.

And that cuts a second way, which matters just as much. If the church's failure could not separate you from Christ, then your own could not either. The failure you have been holding against yourself has no right to stay, because it is inside the same all creation that Scripture already ruled out. His word left nothing outside that sentence, and His Spirit is not standing over you with an exception in His hand.
