The kettle went on at five forty. That part had not changed in nine years.
Odessa dialed in at four minutes to six with the phone face down on the table so the screen would not light up the kitchen. It was still dark out. The window over the sink had that gray in it that is not morning yet, and the radiator was ticking, and she had the same chair she always had, the one that faces away from the hallway so she is not looking at her brother's old coat on the hook while she prays.
There are usually seven of them on the line. Sometimes nine. Bo, who is a foreman and prays like a foreman. Two sisters who dial in from the same house and can be heard telling each other to hush. A woman named Pearline who has never once been late. Somebody always forgets to mute and you hear their spoon.
They go around. That is the whole structure of it, and it has not changed in nine years either. You say your name, you say what you are bringing, you pray it, and then the next voice picks up.
When it came around to Odessa she said, "Odessa. Same as always. Marcus."
And then she stopped, because there was nothing after it. There was no heat in her chest and no words lining up and no lump in her throat, and there had not been for a good while now, and this was the first morning she had not been able to fake the shape of it.
She said, "I have got nothing behind it today. That is just the name."
There was a pause on the line about two seconds long.
And then Bo's voice came up, and he did not say anything to her about it, and he did not ask her how she was doing, and he did not tell her she was tired. He just prayed for Marcus. Her Marcus, by name, out loud, in that flat foreman's voice with the whole weight of nine years in it, and one of the sisters said mm underneath him, and Pearline said his name again after Bo was done.
Odessa sat in the dark with her hand over her mouth and listened to her own prayer being carried across a phone line by people who had heard it eight hundred times.
Maybe you know that flat place. You say the words and the words come out level and correct and empty, and then you spend the rest of the day quietly deciding what the flatness must mean about you. You are standing inside a covenant God keeps, and it is holding you today at exactly the temperature you woke up at. That is what Scripture says a covenant is, and the Holy Spirit is the One who keeps it holding on a morning you cannot feel a thing.
God kept the flat one in the book
There is a psalm in Scripture that does not resolve. Most of them turn somewhere near the end, the way you expect a song to turn, and the singer comes up out of it. Psalm 88 does not. It goes down and it stays down and the last word of it is darkness.
And here is what I want you to see about that, because it is the whole thing. God put it in the songbook. Not in a private drawer. In the songbook, with a choir instruction written on the front of it, handed to a whole congregation of people to sing out loud together in the assembly.
Say the corporate part plainly here, because this is a site about a people and not a private inner life. The psalms belonged to a company. Israel sang them together, and the church has sung them together ever since, and Psalm 88 was never a note somebody left in a diary. It was given to a congregation. Which means God looked at a song with no resolution in it and said: My people will need this one, put it in the book where everybody can reach it.
You are inside a people God has already made room for in the songbook, and the room He made includes the flat mornings. The word says so by what it kept, and the Holy Spirit is the One who put it there and has never edited it out.
But unto thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.Psalm 88:13
That old word prevent means to go before, to come out ahead, to meet a person early. The man is saying: my prayer gets to You first thing. Before the light, before the day, before I have anything to bring. He is not describing a feeling. He is describing an appointment he keeps.
You have a prayer that meets God in the morning whether or not it comes with any heat in it, and that is already true of the words you said today. It is written into that psalm, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a level, empty, correct sentence and carries it up.
Flat is not far
I need to say this next part with some force, because a lot of people are carrying the opposite and nobody told them otherwise.
Dryness is not distance. Flatness is not sin. A prayer with no feeling in it is not a lesser prayer, it is not a half prayer, and it is not evidence that something has gone wrong between you and God. Scripture nowhere grades a prayer by its temperature, and the one psalm that has the least warmth in it is the one God made sure a whole congregation would have in their hands.
And I am not going to tell you to work the feeling up. That is the thing I want to refuse out loud, because it gets sold constantly. Heat that you manufacture is not worship, it is performance with the lights on, and God has never once asked anybody for it. He asked for the appointment. He asked for the name said out loud in the dark kitchen.
You are being faithful today by saying the name, and that is the whole of what was asked of you. The word puts the covenant on God's side and the showing up on yours, and it is His Spirit doing the carrying in between.
Here is the turn, and it is not the one you were bracing for.
You have been reading the flatness as a verdict on your love for God. It is not. It is a report on your body, your year, your sleep, the nine years, and the weight of a name you have said eight hundred times with no visible change. None of that is a report on where you stand with Him, and the reason I can say that flatly is that God nowhere ties your standing to your feeling. He tied it to Christ, and Christ has not gone flat.
You are held in a covenant that is kept from God's side, and it is already secure and does not thin out when you do. That is what the word means when it calls Him faithful, and the Holy Spirit inside you is the deposit He put down on it.
And about the name you have been praying. I will not tell you the answer is coming, and I will not put a season on it or a shape on it. Some things I have watched God do the same week and some things stay open for a very long time, and anybody who tells you they know which is which is selling you something. The unanswered thing is not a verdict on you either. It is not a grade. It is not a bill.
You are praying inside the will of a good God, and the asking itself is already received even while the answer is His to give. It is written that He hears, and His Spirit is the One who takes the words up when they leave your mouth level and tired.
Declare this over yourself
- Nine years of the same name, you are not a failed campaign. In the name of Jesus I say what Scripture says over you: my prayer goes before God in the morning, and this morning it went, flat voice and all.
- Fear of having gone cold, get out. God kept the psalm with no resolution in it and handed it to a whole congregation to sing, and flat has never meant far.
- Lord, You are faithful from Your side and You have never once graded me on my temperature. I am saying the name out loud today and doing one small thing without waiting to feel it, because Your word says You hear and Your Spirit is the One carrying what I cannot lift.
