On the Cook List

The salmon bake is on the long grass above the beach, the way it is every year, and the wind has finally dropped the way it does about five o'clock.

Wes came because his daughter wanted to come.

That is the honest version. He parked on the gravel with everybody else and walked up carrying two folding chairs and a bowl of potato salad his mother made, and the whole time he was working out how long they would have to stay.

He has not been to one of these in a year. Not for a reason anybody could write down. His shift changed, and then he missed one, and then missing them got easier, and somewhere in there a quiet idea moved into him and made itself at home: they have done fine without you, and by now somebody will have taken your slot, and nobody is going to say anything about it because nobody wants that conversation.

There is a sheet of plywood set on two sawhorses near the fire pit with papers stapled to it. Sign-up for the tables. Who is bringing ice. The cook list.

Wes goes over to it because his daughter has run off to find her cousins and he needs something to do with his hands.

The cook list is one page, written out in blue marker by whoever writes it out every year, all of it in the same slanted hand. Cedar planks, first round, second round, who turns them, who watches the fire from eight o'clock.

And there, in the second block, in the same blue marker as everything else, at the same size, in the same slant, with no arrow and no asterisk and no squeezed-in look about it at all, is his family name. Second round. Turning planks.

Not added. Not fitted in. Written when the list was written, in the same sitting as everybody else, by a person who sat down with a marker and did not once wonder whether to include him.

Wes stands there with a bowl of potato salad under his arm and reads it four times.

Behind him somebody is laughing about the ice.

That is your question too.

You spent a long stretch of time being reasonable about your own absence. You worked out the story, and the story was tidy, and the story was that you had been quietly taken off something and nobody was cruel enough to tell you. And then you saw a piece of evidence that will not fit, and you cannot make the evidence and the story live in the same head.

You are counted in, and you were counted in during a sitting you were not present at. That is not encouragement, it is what the written word says about how God chooses, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old line about a nation land on a man reading a page in blue marker.

Look at what gets chosen

Here is the thing that goes wrong with the word chosen, and it goes wrong for almost everybody.

We hear it as a singling out. Somebody stood at the front, looked over the available people, and picked. Which means somebody looked over the room and made a call, and anyone on the list had better find out what it was that got them on, so they can keep doing it.

That is not how Scripture uses the word. Watch what the object of the verb actually is.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD: and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.Psalm 33:12

A nation. A people. Not a man with promise, not a short list of the impressive, not the ones who turned up regularly. The thing chosen is a company, and every person inside that company is inside it because the company was chosen, not because they individually cleared a bar.

That is the plain sense of the bride language too, and this is where it is worth saying flatly. In Scripture the bride is the church, a whole people, corporate, in the same way a nation is called God's own. It is never a private arrangement between Christ and one reader, and it is never a romance. It is a people spoken over.

You are inside a company God chose, and your name being there is a fact about that company. The word puts the choosing on a people and never once on a performance, and it is His Spirit who joined you to that body rather than any decision you made to look worth having.

There was never a panel

Follow it out, because this is where the relief actually lives.

If the choosing had been an audition, then every one of your bad years would be evidence, and every stretch where you went quiet would be a mark against you, and the whole thing would come down to whether you had been sufficiently interesting to keep. That is the arrangement your last year was built on. It is why the story you told yourself made sense.

But there was no panel. There was nobody sitting with a marker weighing whether to write your family down. The list was written for a town, and writing it for a town is what put your name in the second block.

You were counted in before anything you did could count either way. That is what the written word says about a people chosen for an inheritance, and the Holy Spirit does not run a second round of selection on the people He has already gathered.

Nobody wrote you in later

There is one more thing in that page that I want to hand you, and it is the handwriting.

Not an arrow. Not an asterisk. Not a different pen, and not a squeeze at the bottom of the block where somebody remembered you at the end and made room. Same marker. Same slant. Same size as the family that has been going for thirty years.

If you had been added, you would know exactly what you were. You would be the one they made room for, and you would spend every salmon bake for the rest of your life being grateful in a way that never quite settles.

You are written in the same hand as everybody else, and there is no smaller print anywhere on you. Scripture says God chose a people for His own inheritance, all of them at once and in one sitting, and His Spirit does not keep a second list of the ones who are here on sufferance.
