The Seating Chart Was Printed

The rehearsal is in the multipurpose room at the community center, which has a stage at one end and a folded up ping pong table against the wall at the other, and a ceiling that makes every low note sound like it is happening in a stairwell.

Ray gets there twenty minutes early because he has not carried a cello into a building since the Clinton administration and he wants to be sitting down before anybody watches him do it.

The cello is not his. It belongs to a neighbor whose daughter took it to college, decided on nursing, and left it in a hall closet under a coat. The case has her initials on a luggage tag and a sticker from a summer camp that closed. Ray has spent two weeks in his garage getting the C string to stop buzzing and getting his left hand to stop apologizing.

They called him in April. A woman from the board, very brisk, said they were short in the cello section and somebody had mentioned his name, and Ray said yes before he could hear himself say it and then spent a whole night deciding it was a favor he was doing them.

That is the frame he carries through the door. Substitute. Placeholder. The man they got because the man they wanted was not available.

The chairs are already out in a curve. Music stands, most of them at the wrong height. A trumpet player somewhere behind him running the same four bars over and over, worse each time and laughing about it.

Ray finds the cello section, and there are four chairs, and the last one has a folder on it with a rubber band around it, and taped flat to the stand in front of it is a sheet of paper.

It is the seating chart. Not for tonight. For the season. Every section, every desk, forty one names in eleven point type, printed and laminated and gone soft at one corner from being carried around in somebody's tote bag since June.

He stands there holding a borrowed instrument by the neck, reading his own name in a font somebody chose two months before he ever answered the phone. A woman in the second violins looks up and says, that is you, isn't it, we have been holding that chair since spring.

You know that walk from the door to the chair.

You have made it into rooms, into families, into congregations, into whatever the equivalent is in your life, and you made it carrying the same sentence Ray was carrying: I am the substitute here. Somebody needed a body and I was the body. And the reason that sentence is so hard to put down is that it protects you. If you are only filling in, then nobody can take anything away from you, because you never had it. You are inside a company that was chosen whole, and you were counted into it before you ever answered anyone's phone call. That is not a compliment I am paying you, it is what Scripture says God did, and the Holy Spirit is the one who seats a living person inside a decision that old.

God was not choosing soloists

Let me show you what the sentence in Romans is actually built to do, because almost everybody meets it as a sentence about being personally singled out, and that is not the shape of it at all.

First, plainly, the thing this whole site is about. When Scripture calls anybody the bride, it means the church: a whole people, corporate, plural, a company and not a person. It is the same kind of word as household, nation, body, city and flock. It has never meant a private romance between Christ and one reader, and if that reading has ever made you uncomfortable, keep the instinct, because the corporate one is the one the Bible is actually using. What follows only works at that size.

Now the verse.

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.Romans 8:29

You have been looked at with the whole household in view, and that look landed on you long before you had anything to show anybody. Scripture says He foreknew and He predestined, both of those verbs His and neither of them yours, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes two old words like that feel like a chair rather than a threat.

People stop reading that sentence one word too early. They stop at predestinate, get frightened or flattered depending on temperament, and never reach the clause that tells you what the whole thing was for.

That he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

That is the purpose. Not that somebody would be picked. That there would be a many. A household with a firstborn in it, which is a word that means nothing at all unless there are others in the room with him. God was not auditioning individuals and keeping the good ones. He was determining that His Son would have a family around Him, and the entire family was in view at once.

You are inside a many that God settled on before there was anyone to impress. The word says the aim was a household with Christ as the firstborn, and it is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with your own spirit that you are in that family, which is language about kinship rather than about merit.

A chart is not a compliment

Here is why Ray's frame is wrong even on its own terms.

He read that laminated sheet as a statement about him, so it landed as either flattery or a mistake, and he went straight for mistake, the way people do. But a seating chart is not a statement about a player. It is the shape of an orchestra. Somebody sat down in June with a roster and a piece of music and drew the whole ensemble at once, because you cannot draw half of one. Every name on that page is there for the same reason every other name is there: there is an orchestra, and this is what an orchestra is shaped like.

Nobody on that sheet auditioned that night. Nobody on it is there because they were the best available cellist in the county, and nobody on it is there by charity either. They are there because the thing exists and they are in it.

You were counted in as part of a whole, and there is no reason attached to your name that anybody could ever take back. That is written into the shape of the promise itself, chosen in Him, us, a plural, before the foundation of the world, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old sentence like that land on a man standing in a multipurpose room with a borrowed instrument.

And notice what that does to the shame in it. If the choosing had been about quality, then the borrowed cello matters, the fifteen missing years matter, the buzzing C string matters enormously. If the choosing was of a company, the borrowed cello is simply the instrument that got him there.

You are seated on the strength of the company, and the fifteen missing years have no vote in it. The word says the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance, meaning He does not take them back, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a man in a chair he never talked his way into.
